Call For Papers : SPT 2023

Theme of the conference: Technology and mobility

Tokyo, Japan. June 7-10, 2023

The Japanese Society for Science and Technology Studies (JSSTS) will host the 23rd biennial international conference of the Society for Philosophy and Technology. The conference will be celebrated primarily in person. The conference theme is “Technology and Mobility.”

Technologies always expand human mobility. Ships have made transcontinental travel possible, and cars have made everyday long-distance movement possible. We can also say that the development of the telephone and internet has made the world “smaller” and thereby changed our idea of mobility. And now, developments in technologies such as AI and self-driving cars are bringing a new situation. Technologies not only expand the range of our movement but also significantly change the way we move.

In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic forces us to consider mobility issues. The pandemic forced us to stop moving all over the world, and instead, we created a variety of activities by using ICT technologies. The situation calls into questions: What does it mean for people to move and meet in person, and how does technology connect people?

At this conference, we aim to reflect on the relationship between technologies and mobility, but papers reflecting on any aspect of technology are welcomed.

Submissions

Submissions that engage in philosophical aspects of technology are welcomed, including those from disciplines other than philosophy (e.g., STS, history, anthropology, and sociology). Submissions from practitioners, including entrepreneurs, engineers, and engineering faculty, are also encouraged.

Paper, Poster, and Panel Submissions

Paper submissions should include a brief (100 word) abstract and an extended (250-500 words) abstract. Poster submissions require a brief (150 word plus references) abstract. Panel proposals should be submitted by the panel organizer and should include a brief abstract (250 words), and, for each panelist, title and extended (250-500 words) abstract. Awards

The Society for Philosophy and Technology is proud to sponsor two awards: “SPT Early Career Award” and “SPT Graduate Student Paper Awards”.

SPT Early Career Award

This award, which includes a $500 (USD) prize, will be given to an early career scholar whose accepted paper for SPT 2023, in the judgment of the SPT Executive Board, best embodies exceptional and innovative scholarly work that promises to expand the scope of research in this field. Priority will thus be given to work that promotes growth and open horizons in philosophical research on technology, for example, by developing new ideas, topics, methodologies, arguments, conceptual frameworks, or disciplinary perspectives.

Early career scholars (less than 10 years since the Ph.D., with exceptions for parental leave) whose abstracts are accepted by the SPT 2023 program committee may submit full papers (max. 3000 words) to the SPT Board by April 1, 2023 for award consideration; the winner will be notified by April 17 and listed on the conference program. Those selected must register and present the paper at the conference to receive the award and stipend. Additional funds for travel to SPT 2023 may be offered. The award will be formally presented to the winner at the award SPT session. Papers from those wishing to be considered for this award should be sent to Glen Miller glenmiller(at)tamu.edu.

SPT Graduate Student Paper Awards

The Society for Philosophy and Technology will sponsor graduate student paper awards given to outstanding submissions by graduate students for SPT 2023. These awards include a $500 USD travel stipend. Graduate students (including the equivalent of Ph.D. candidates, doctoral students, or research master students) who wish to be considered for an award must submit a complete draft (max. 3000 words) of the paper to be considered to an independent SPT award committee by January 2, 2023, following the separate submission of the abstract by December 1, 2022. The full paper should be stripped of identifying information but include a cover sheet with the paper title, 150-200 word abstract, the author’s name, e-mail address and current graduate program details (e.g., date of enrollment, degree being pursued, department, and institution).

Submitted papers will be blind reviewed by the SPT award committee. Only authors whose abstracts are accepted by the program committee for the conference program will be eligible to receive a graduate student paper award, and those selected must register and present the paper at the conference to receive the award and stipend. Co-authored submissions are ineligible for graduate student paper awards unless all authors are graduate students and are listed as such, with the required program information, on the paper cover sheet.

To apply for a graduate paper award, please send a full paper (max 3000 words) and cover sheet as attachment of e-mail to Glen Miller glenmiller(at)tamu.edu by January 2, 2023. Awardees will be notified by mid-February.
