Special Interest Groups

SPT is developing a new initiative to encourage members to be more active and involved in the Society. This new initiative aims at creating Special Interest Groups, or SIGs. A SIG is a dedicated effort of one or two years on a specific goal. The goals of a SIG should be either:

· an internal SPT goal (e.g., reaching out to non-US-EU communities, creating a repository of teaching material)

· advancing a topic in philosophy of technology (e.g., a seminar series, a joint working group for philosophy of technology and another academic field)

· contributing to a public discussion from a philosophy of technology perspective (e.g., covid 19, Black lives Matter).

SIGs have a chair and a plan of activities for realizing their proposed goals. Above all, SIGs are intended as a way for members to collaborate with other SPT members and get interesting things done.

Process

In other to establish a SIG one can send a proposal of up to two pages to Pieter Vermaas, p.e.vermaas@tudelft.nl. That proposal should contain clear descriptions of:

· the goal of the SIG;

· a plan of action to realize the proposed goal;

· the name(s) of the chair(s) who will lead the SIG (one or two persons).

Proposals for SIGs will be reviewed and approved by the SPT Executive Board. Once approved, they will be announced on the SPT website. The Executive Board will also assess the progress of the groups. To allow for this assessment, the chair(s) of the SIG will send a brief description of accomplishments yearly. This process is intended to determine the best ways that the SPT Board can assist these efforts.

SIGs can last for up to two years. An SGI can be renewed for another two years after submission of a proposal. The proposal should contain, the (new) goal, plan of action, and chair(s).

Proposals and inquiries can be sent to Pieter Vermaas, p.e.vermaas@tudelft.nl.
